Original illustration
by Patrick Kirl; composition and typography by Crystal Wood. Pat Kirl's colorful watercolor rendering of the title character and other images from the story makes a wraparound cover for the book; the strand of "baling wire" at the top left corkscrews onto the back cover and frames the back cover copy. An interesting note: In the first version of the illustration, Pat had painted Lizzie's hand holding the washer in what the author pointed out was an incorrect way! Rather than doing the illustration over, Pat simply re-did the arm and Crystal seamlessly Photoshopped it in! |

Photograph by
Jonathan Reynolds; composition and typography by Crystal Wood. This still life is composed of many "found" items that represent elements in the story. The photo album contains old photos from Crystal's in-laws' family collection; the jelly jar is an actual snuff jar filled with plum jelly, and it sits on a Masonic Bible. Other items are a spray of dogwood, an antique collector's plate of Arkansas, and in the background (not very visible in this copy of the photo), Crystal's grandfather's old tabletop radio. Jonathan lighted the scene especially to capture a sparkle in the jelly jar. The sparkle adds the touch that accurately portrays the homey warmth of the book. |
